Away Day Guide – Burnley

Burnley Football Club and Turf Moor:

Burnley Football Club actually began life as a rugby club named Burnley Rovers but became Burnley Football Club in 1882 and soon after moved to Turf Moor, which has been home to the club ever since. Burnley’s first match at Turf Moor was played on February 17th 1883, when the home side lost 3–6 to Rawtenstall.

Burnley Football Club became a founder member of the Football League in 1888 and has since won a host of major honours. The first of those honours was the Second Division title in the 1897-98 season.

Turf Moor was redeveloped in the 1990s at a cost of £6.5 million and further redevelopment took place when the club won promotion to the Premier League in 2009.

Nowadays, Turf Moor has a capacity of 22, 546. Away fans are seated in the David Fishwick Stand, which is at one end of the ground. While some money has been spent on updating facilities in this section of Turf Moor, the concourse is not for the faint-hearted and, given the sizeable following the Villans will have tomorrow, getting served in the ground could prove tricky. Seating in the stand is far from modern and there are some supporting pillars to obstruct views.

How to get there:

By car:

A journey by car to Turf Moor from Birmingham via the M6 will take just over two hours, depending on traffic.

Use postcode BB10 4BX for sat navs.

Parking is available at Burnley Cricket Club, next to the ground, and at the Hollywood Star pub on Manchester Road.

Some on-street parking is also available.

Additionally, there are plenty of car parks in the local area and Burnley officials recommend the ones in Brown Street, Plumb Street and Bancroft Avenue.

By train:

Hourly train services to Burnley Central from New Street Station, taking approximately two hours and forty-five minutes (including a change at Preston).

Taxis are available outside Burnley Central Station. Alternatively, walking to the ground takes in the region of twenty minutes.

Where to drink:

Burnley Cricket Club is next to Turf Moor and away fans are welcome there. The club has four bars and food is served. 1,500 away fans can be accommodated in the cricket club. Be aware that it does get very busy on match days as it is a popular place. Patrons can enjoy Sky Sports and there is a happy hour post-match. Here’s hoping the Villans are very happy indeed come 5p.m.

Another option, which may be of interest to those travelling by train or looking for food, is the Hollywood Star pub on Manchester Road. Parking is available and customers can enjoy two meals for £10 there.

Also located on Manchester Road, by the canal bank, is The Inn on the Wharf, another establishment serving food and happy to admit considerable numbers of away fans.

  1. Hi Villa Fan
I hope you enjoy your trip to Burnley – you play well but lose of course!. Just in case you didn’t know Burnley play in Claret and Blue because of Aston Villa. In the early days of the Football League Burnley were having a bad time and Villa were the successful team of the era. So the club decided to swop colours from green and white to copy the Villa and have played in the colours ever since.
