Stop singling out individuals

Another footballing weekend has come and gone and with it came another woeful performance from Aston Villa Football Club at Goodison Park. If you believe Premier League predictions at thatsagoal The club is staring relegation in the face after a disastrous start to the season that has seen us pick up five points from thirteen games. No team has survived after such a start.

It’s difficult to know who to blame. Should Randy Lerner take the heat? How much blame can be laid at Tom Fox’s door? Shouldn’t the players be held accountable?

There is one man who is getting a lot of unjust criticism from many sections of our support – Kieran Richardson. Richardson’s Aston Villa career has been nothing to write home. Since arriving from Fulham in the summer of 2014, he has appeared predominantly as a make-shift left back and at times as a bit part midfielder. After a series of below par performances, he has become a scapegoat for the failings of the whole team and seems to be an easy target for some supporters who want to find someone to blame for the position that the club finds itself in.

Aston Villa Football Club sits bottom of the table because our players lack defensive organisation, are liable to defensive mishaps, lack creativity and have little in the way of goal threat, not because our reserve left back has had a few poor games. The crux of the problem lies much deeper than that and the first team players have all been poor and must therefore take collective responsibility for the results so far this season. I feel that singling Richardson out to bear the brunt of the fans’ frustration is unfair as he is one of a whole host of players who have underperformed this season.

Now is not the time for creating a scapegoat toblame for bad results whether that be Kieran Richardson, Brad Guzan or Gabby Agbonlahor – two others who have come in for criticism this season. Everyone realises that performances haven’t been good enough, including the players themselves.

The mess that Aston Villa Football Club finds itself in is frustrating and depressing for everyone connected to the club but this is the time to show our class as supporters. We have some massive games coming up and it is vital that we support each man in a claret and blue shirt for the entire ninety minutes of every game, regardless of their previous performances. Constant support and vocal backing throughout the game against Watford will hopefully provide the team with enough inspiration to dig deep and produce a long overdue winning performance. Our supporters can definitely make a  big difference.
