The experienced goalkeeper began his career as a young boy at Carrow Road. He made his first team debut for Norwich City in December 1994, due to an injury to first choice ‘keeper Bryan Gunn. Due to Gunn’s lengthy layoff, Marshall played for the rest of the season, Norwich were unfortunately relegated however.
The start of next season saw Gunn reclaim his first choice position, and Andy went out on loan to gain first team experience. He first went to Bournemouth, where he made 11 league appearances during his time on the south cost. During the same season, Gillingham also moved to sign Marshall on loan. He made 5 appearances before returning to the Canaries.
At the end of the 96/97 season was where Marshall would begin to establish himself in the Norwich first team. He ousted Gunn for the number 1 shirt and began to make a name for himself amongst the fans. He went on to make 219 appearances in all competitions for Norwich, he also won Player of the Season in his best and last season at Carrow Road. He played a big part in helping Norwich avoid relegation in 00/01 and refused to sign a new deal as he wanted to play Premier League football.
This allowed Ispwich Town to come in and sign Marshall on a free transfer at the end of the 00/01 season. Due to the rivalry between Ipswich and Norwich, the deal created anger and mixed reactions amongst both sets of supporters. He kept an impressive clean sheet at his former club Norwich and celebrated enthusiastically, yet this still didn’t help the Tractor Boys warm towards Marshall. He spent only 2 and a half seasons at Portman Road. He made 53 league appearances in total for Ipswich Town, before moving to Wolverhampton on loan in November 2003. He didn’t make an appearance at Molineux during his one month loan.
Millwall then came in for a loan move for Marshall in January of 2004. The deal was made permanent in March of that year. He won many man of the match awards and impressed during his first half season at The Den. He also played in the Millwall side which reached the FA Cup Final that season. They were beaten 3-0 by Manchester United in the final however despite Marshall’s best efforts. He spent 2 and half seasons at Millwall, making 60 league appearances. He left once his contract expired at the end of the 05/06 season.
Coventry City were the next team to pick him on a free transfer in June 2006. He became a fan favorite at then Highfield Road during his time there. He won the London Supporters Player of the Year Trophy, Wales Supporters Player of the Year, and Fan’s Player of the Year after a great 06/07 season, He made 59 league appearances for Coventry before being released at the end of his contract in June 2009.
Villa then stepped in and snapped the experienced ‘keeper up in August 2009, as backup to Americans Brad Friedel and Brad Guzan. Due to being out of contract, there was no fee involved. Andy was a member of the reserve side which won the Premier Reserve South League in 09/10.
He initially left Villa at the end of the 09/10 season, but later rejoined the club on another one year contract. Marshall was named on the bench for the first time in the league against Chelsea in January 2011. This was due to Brad Guzan going on loan to Hull City. He signed another one year deal at the club in Match 2011. His debut came as a second half substitute in the pre-season friendly against Walsall in July 2011.
Andy Marshall has yet to play competitively for the club.
