Read more »Blackburn did the double over Villa in the league this season, very much the same as we did in the cup over them.
The game had end of season wrote all over it, with two sides that looked like they had very little to play for. Villa were lucky that Liverpool failed to pick up three points away at already relegated Hull or they could of finished 7th.
Never the less we have finished 6th for the third season running now but this season we have enjoyed runs in both domestic cups.
It was a Richard Dunne own goal that came six minutes from time that gifted Blackburn all three points which was a bit unfair on possibly the best player on the pitch yesterday and one of Villa’s best all season.
Villa had there chances in the first half when Gabby Agbonlahor and James Collins both forced saves out of Paul Robinson which would of done his England chances no harm what so ever.
Both sides could of easily had a penalty on another day when David Dunn was brought down by Collins in the Villa area only to be shown a yellow card for diving, and Christopher Samba brought down John Carew five minutes later. Replays later showed that both sides had a good case for a penalty.
It was a dissapointing result to lose against a side who are very poor away from home but never the less we would of finished sixth regardless because of how results went elsewhere.
Overall a decent season and we can now go away enjoy our summers and the World Cup and look forward to the new season.

Moneybags City to strong for fighting Villa!

Read more »Manchester City eventually won 3-1 witch probably flattered them a little against a fighting Aston Villa.
The result no signals the end for Villa Champions League hope’s and means Manchester City go into the game against Spurs in mid-week slight favourites to take the 4th spot.
Villa took the lead against the run of play after 16 minutes. Stewart Downing probably made one of the best run’s forward he’s made since signing for Villa, before playing in John Carew who then turns Kolo Toure and slips the ball underneath Marton Fullop.
Villa looked almost certain to go into the half time break with a deserved lead until Steven Warnock brought down Adam Johnson in the area. Carlos Tevez stepped up and scored the resulting penalty kick.
Carew nearly scored his second of the game to give Villa back the lead after again turning Toure but was this time denied by the cross bar.
Manchester City however did take their chance when they broke free and Johnson picks out Emmanuel Adebayor who scores from six yards out.
In the second half Villa went for it, as City sat back and Martin O’Neill introduced both Emile Heskey and Nathan Delfouneso.
However, City caught Villa on the counter attack very late in the game when Shaun Wright Phillips fed Craig Bellamy a ball into the area and he smashed the ball home.
I can’t really be disappointed in today’s result, the players and the manager both went for the win but in the end we just wasn’t good enough. Let’s just hope Chelsea can now beat Liverpool so we stay in the top 6 and not drop to 7th.

However, just after the hour mark Chelsea equalised when Jeffery Bruma fired home a free kick from 25 yards out.
The two sides will now do battle again at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.

Villa close in on fourth spot!

Read more »Tonight’s game had a potential banana skin written all over it, especially with Hull needing to win to stay in the Premier League.
You could say it was a job well done by the boys, and a professional one at that. Yes we had some scares but at the same time always looked in control of the game.
Villa took after just 13 minutes when Paul McShane’s awful clearance hit Carew and the ball rolled to Gabby Agbonlahor. Gabby then lines up the ball and smashes hit into the top corner and what a fine finish it was.
Hull had a few chances themselves and maybe should of scored when Kevin Kilbane just had to put the ball in the net, with only James Collins on the line but somehow hit the giant defender.
Early in the second half Richard Dunne and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink collided in the Villa box witch then resulted in 10 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game.
Villa seeled the victory when John Carew broke and as he played the ball to James Milner he cuts inside only to be brought down by former Villa player George Boateng.
Milner then stepped up himself to score the penalty and bag all three points for Villa.
Villa now move within three points of Spurs in fourth spot and next up for us is Blues the weekend, so come on the lads, it’s still possible.

Delfouneso wins it for Villa!

Read more »Villa could have so easily be wondering how they didn’t win today with the amount of missed chances today, John Carew in particular should of walked away with the match ball.
Portsmouth went into this game with nothing to lose and everything to gain, already relegated and a place in the FA Cup final they were playing for pride, and they didn’t just roll over and die for Villa.
Despite the early pressure from Villa it was Portsmouth who took the lead. Van der Borre twisted inside Stephen Warnock and cuts the ball across goal where it came out to Michael Brown who smashed the ball past Brad Friedel in the Villa goal.
Villa didn’t have to wait long though to get back on level terms, in fact it was only six minutes. Carew beat the offside trap, cut inside David Wilson and smashed the ball past England keeper David James.
Five minutes before the end of the first half Villa were awarded a penalty when Papa Boupa Diop brought down Carew in the box. Carew stepped up only for it to be hit straight down the middle and for James to save it easily.
Villa could and maybe should of have at least two more clear cut penalties. The first was when Gabby Agbonlahor was brought down in the area. Somehow the referee awarded Portsmouth a free-kick to the shock of the whole stadium. And later on Ashley Young was brought down by Anthony Van der Borre, but again the referee said no.
Villa did finally score a winner with eight minutes left to play. Villa take a quick free kick, which meets Emile Heskey’s head and Nathan Delfouneso scores from close range to score his first goal in the Premier League.
This wasn’t as easy as some might of thought it could be but never the less it was an important three points for Villa. It moves them above Liverpool in the table and gives them a four point gap from Everton.
