Jordan Amavi out for the rest of the season

I hate international breaks! A week without watching Villa just makes it last longer and boring. Unfortunately, the international break meant that some of our players left B6 and joined their international team-mates to play in various friendlies and qualifiers this week for their respective countries. This also meant that the gaffer, Rémi Garde, will be spending less time getting to know some of his players.

While our players may look forward to going out on international duty, doing so increases the chances of our players getting ‘tapped up’ or convinced by other players to join ‘bigger’ clubs. It also carries the risk of injury and fatigue. This causes a real concern for managers and fans alike, as we don’t want to see any of our players get injured, especially given our current plight.

With that said, it was only sod’s law when news filtered around on Twitter that Jordan Amavi, considered one of the most effective left backs in the Premier League already this season by fans, had injured himself while playing for the French Under-21 team during a qualifier against Northern Ireland.

Some fans were saying it looked really bad while others felt that the fact that he walked off the pitch with the support of the team’s physios indicated that the injury may not be too bad. However, clips of how he fell down also started filtering through and it was clear to see that it was indeed a very serious injury. That he had to be stretched off all but confirmed the severity.

On Sunday afternoon, after much speculation about how the scan on the player’s knee went, news from the official AVFC Twitter account confirmed that the dynamic defender’s season was over.

A few reports claimed that Amiavi had torn the ACL in his right knee. Having incurred the same injury, I can tell you that overcoming the injury, going through the vigorous rehabilitation in terms of recovery and physiotherapy, requires a strong mental attitude. He will have to put the work in to come back. The good news is that in this day and age the medical facilities and assistance that are provided to Premier League footballers are top notch.

Jordan Amavi seems like a top bloke and definitely has the mental character to come back from this. He’s not the first player at Aston Villa that this has happened to, as Fabian Delph, Gary Gardner and fan favourite Jores Okore have had the same injury. It will take time but he will come back stronger than ever. He may even do some work in the gym to become a tougher opponent to come up against.

Amavi wasn’t the only player to pick up an injury on international duty. Rudy Gestede picked up an injury and only played half of Benin’s game against Burkina Faso on Friday. His is thought to be a minor knock and the striker could be fit to face Everton at the weekend which would certainly be good news for those following bets at accumulatortips.org.uk. Jordan Ayew also picked up a slight knock as Ghana drew 0-0 against Comoros in an 2018 World Cup qualifier but he lasted the whole ninety minutes.

Unfortunately, it looks like Kieran Richardson will be our designated left back for the remainder of the season, unless Rémi Garde is able to bring back Aly Cissokho, who is currently on loan at Porto, in January. Defensively solid, Cissokho would provide very good defensive cover at the back and he is a player who has played and thrived under Garde before.
